Exciting to see Eastmoreland 100 Project get more interest from the community represented by the Sellwood Bee Newspaper. The reporter Dana Beck and I had a great conversation about the golf course's origin story as well as the community. He's on the "history beat" and hope to have more opportunities to collaborate and share stories of life in the community surrounding the golf course.. Click the image below to read the entire article in the Sellwood Bee! I love his added detail on the fashion styles at the time. A quick note, the "knickers" so much a part of early golf history - was a trend started by none other than Harry Vardon, greatest golfer of his era and the "old man" of the duel for the 1913 U.S. Open with the 19 year old caddie Francois Ouimet. Harry Vardon visited Portland on his national tour of the U.S with Ted Ray - and played a famous match against Chandler Egan at Waverley.
Those knickers... were a result of him being uncomfortable playing in a suit and getting trousers wet - thus donning what was considered "boy's wear" and initially being considered at best a dandy at at worst an faux-paux. Though after winning yet another British Open in the new garb - within a year every clubhouse in England and Scotland was filled with kickers.

Steve Brandon, sports editor of the Portland Tribune wrote a great piece about the 2017 City Championship. He's a longtime sports beat writer going back to the days of the Oregon Journal, when Bill Muffler, would hand out the plum assignment to cover the City Championship to young cubs like Steve. At the Launch party we featured many photos in Bill's possession that helped showcase winners including Rick Raskoff, Don Pickens, a young and dapper Dick Estey, and of course the great Benny Hughes, on whom the championship trophy now bears his name. Back from the beginning, the City Championship, like all amatuer golf events has been a weeklong match play battle, comprising 4-5 days of 36 holes a day. According to Linda Schwartz "it was a battle out there" against the top golfers in the city - and often the heat. The leaders on Day 1 battled through the final 18 with Noah Yano completing his wire-to-wire finish with a gallant par on the 18th green after a wayward drive - leaving 217 to the flag and a "man-up" 6 iron to 15 feet.
